ARD-KD closed loop control using external feedback...

Hello,

In our setup we have an ARD-KD stepper pushing a saw. The saw has a digital inverter which provides live operation data including load%. Both are controlled through modbus-rtu and have reasonably low communication latency.
We're thinking of implementing a simple pid-like controller to adjust the stepper speed using the feedback from the saw. Is this feasible given the interface of ARD-KD at all (let's assume the feedback latency is not a problem)? If it is, any idea how this can be achieved?

To move the saw we currently use position commands with some predefined pos/speed/accel/etc settings. From what I understand speed-control is a 'B'-type operation which means the stepper should be stopped/started for the command to have effect. So this approach won't work. Is there any other way?
Can this be achieved through 'RUN current' control (which is 'A'-type)?

Hi Vazkus,

For the ARD-KD the speed can only be changed between the 64 programmable operations while the motor is running. Once the motor is stopped and the ready output is on then the 64 programmable operations can be changed via Modbus or via our MEXE02 software. Unfortunately there is no way to control the speed thru the run current control.

Do AZ-series drivers have different capabilities that can make them more suitable for this kind of application?

Yes AZ would allow for speed changes via Modbus to its 256 operations while the motor is operating.
