ASC46AK unit problem(stepper + driver)

Postby hzs90 » Thu Jul 30, 2015 11:39 pm

Hello!

I have an ASC46AK unit (ASM46AK stepper + ASD18A-K driver). I have to change the PLC (which controls the driver) to another model, because it has some bad I/O point. However a few I/O points are working, so I could see that the motor and the driver works fine. I take out the bad PLC, but now I cant control the motor.

The new PLC is different, so I have to write a new program.

The manual is here: http://www.orientalmotor.com/products/pdfs/opmanuals/HM-6163-12E.pdf
On page 32 there is an I/O connection table. I have wires on pin 2,3,9,10,11,12,25,26.
Here is what I've done: the driver gets the 24V (green LED is on); pin 2 is on GND; pin 3 is on 24V. So the motor has the voltage.
According to the manual page 34: the driver is in 2-pulse mode; PIN 10 or 12 gets an 5V pulse signal from an arduino, but nothing happens. I have tried to change the pulse speed and width but nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Hi hzs90,

Thank you for using our forum. Pins 10 and 12 are supposed to receive 0v not 5v. 5v is supposed to go to pins 9 and 11. Please follow one of the sinking/sourcing wiring examples from page 25~27 of the manual you linked to this post. Let us know if that works.

We also offer newer products than the ASC46AK unit that you're using now. Let us know if you're interested in its newer version. We have an AR high efficiency series and an even newer AZ series with built-in battery-free absolute sensors for fast homing without an external sensor.

Thank you for your reply.

Are you sure that in 2-pulse input mode I should use pins 10,12 are 0V, and pins 9, 11 are 5V?
According to the manual page 34: I need only pins 10 and 12. Input on 10 to rotate one direction and input on 12 to rotate another direction. Am I wrong?
And there is nothing about pins 9 and 11 in 2-pulse mode. So those pins should be GND. Am I wrong?

One more question: What type of 5V should be the input? Pulsing (PWM) or simple continuous 5V?
Thank you

Hi hzs90,

Please refer to the connection examples between a controller and a driver on pages 25~27 of your manual. It should clear this up. You need to pick one of the wiring diagrams and follow it. Our driver can connect to either sourcing or sourcing I/O so the best choice could depend on the type of I/O your controller has.

For the ASC46AK in 2-pulse mode, both signals need to be pulses. If our driver receives a pulse in the CW input, then it will take one step in the CW direction. If our driver receives a pulse in the CCW input, then it will take one step in the CCW direction.

Thank you for your reply.
It seems that the driver I have does not work properly.
Is it possible to control the asm46ak or asm66ak steppers without the drivers? I know it is, I just want to get the connection diagram for the wires. Is it possible to send me? Thank you.

Hi hzs90,

No, it's not possible to control the ASM46AK or ASM66AK motors without their dedicated drivers, ASD18A-K and ASD36A-K. The ASM motor + ASD driver is a pretty special high performance system, and it would be almost impossible to duplicate its performance with a 3rd party driver. Using a 3rd party driver will also void our 2-year manufacturer's warranty if any issues arise. We would suggest that you purchase the original drivers to replace your existing drivers.
