Q: How do I convert my single-phase 115/120v AC household voltage to a single-phase 230/240v AC voltage? I'm building a European version of my machine. I'm switching out the 115v ES series motors and controllers I'm using right now for the US version to the 230v versions, but I'll need to do some testing here before I ship the machines. Since they use single-phase 230vAC/50Hz over there, I need to do some testing here with my available single-phase low household voltage. I do not have 230/240v available. I think this is possible by connecting 2 single-phase 115v supplies. Can you help?
A: It is possible, but we cannot support this method since it can be dangerous for non-qualified electricians, it is outside of our specifications, and it's not a tested method by us. If you would like the take the risk to test, there are various online sources that can help. The risk includes voiding the manufacturer's warranty.
The safe solution is to use a step-up transformer to convert your single-phase 120v to single-phase 240v. You will also need to change your power supply frequency from 60 Hz (US) to 50 Hz (Europe). The power supply frequency changes the speed on the motor, so even if you were able to do your proposed method above, it would not be a good test since it would be still at 60 Hz.
