Oriental Motor is pleased to introduce our latest technology for advanced positioning applications, the AZ Series 0.36° Battery-Free, Absolute Senor Equipped Motor and Driver packages. The AZ Series offers self-maintained closed loop control, substantially reduces heat generation from the motor, and by incorporating the newly developed Absolute Sensor (ABZO), absolute-type positioning is obtainable without the need for battery back-up or external sensors.
Advanced operation and function control is also included through our MEXE02 software (available as a free download). The AZ Series can perform quick positioning operations over a short distance while providing smooth performance. With many powerful functions available on the MEXE02 software and connectivity to a computer via a standard USB cable (customer provided), advanced or time saving motion profiles are now possible. The AZ Series motors are offered with dedicated drivers for plug & play connectivity. Customers can select the built-in controller type (FLEX) driver or pulse input type driver with single-phase 100-120 VAC, single-phase/three-phase 200-240 VAC or 24/48 VDC input. Round shaft motor only type or four different geared types are available as standard products including our newest, Harmonic Planetary gear (HPG) with either a centered shaft or flange mount available.
For customers requiring absolute positioning, the common solution today is to utilize a battery to keep the information stored in the driver active. Common benefits for this technology are to reduce homing delays during a problem, or line stoppage, or when powering down the machine for service or shipping. Batteries typically last for up to 2 weeks without being charged and for three to five years in service. For several examples of industries that typically use absolute systems, semiconductor, automotive manufacturing or general FA applications, batteries are something they have requested to not have to use as maintenance, regulations and disposal require special handling. With our new geared absolute magnetic ABZO sensor system, the Driver always knows the position of the motor, up to 1,800 revolutions. This offers a great performance advantage as the motor and driver can operate in a closed loop method without the required third party sensors. This also allows for the shortest moves possible and sensorless homing for example. While there are other mechanical sensors on the market, Oriental Motor’s patent pending design is among the most compact and lightest on the market making the overall motor length as short as it can be. Also, by using resin based gears that have a self lubricating characteristic, they will last longer than the bearings in the motor and offer a lower
inertia moment from the gears.

Software & Connection
MEXE02 Software has been updated to include the AZ Series and is available for free download on our website. A standard USB cable can be used to connect the computer to the driver.
*Note: the CC05IF-USB communications cable that we use for other Flex products will not work for the AZ series.
Built into the front of the driver, the home position can be easily set by pressing a button on the driver, which is saved by the Absolute Sensor. In addition, home setting is possible with the MEXE02 data setting software or external input signal.
Power Shut-off Function (AC Driver only)
Commonly known as Safe Torque Off (STO). In our manual we call it the ETO functions. The power removal function (ETO function) is a function that stops power supply of the motor forcibly and turns the output torque of the motor OFF when a signal is input from the external input. Unlike stop by the FREE input (all windings off), power supply of the motor is directly cut off by the hardware. At the time of shipment, both the HWTO1 input and HWTO2 input are connected with a jumper wire and are turned ON.
Number of Possible Preset Positions
The AZ series Flex/stored data drivers can store up to 256 (0~255) motion profiles vs 64 on other Flex/stored data products such as the AR series.

The AZ Series features our standard gearheads including the TS, PS and HG. A new addition is the HPG (Harmonic Planetary) gear type with two mounting configurations, shaft or flange mount. The HPG comes in two gear ratios; 5:1 and 9:1 – 40mm mounting 5:1 and 15:1 – 60 mm mounting.
Torque ranges are from 13.2 lb-in up to 79 lb-in making these some of the more powerful gearheads. With the flange mount type, direct load mounting to the gear head is available and moment loads are provided.
All packages come standard with a 3m (9.8ft) cable. A standard cable must be used as the motor connectors do not connect directly into the driver. For extension cables or flexible cables, the AZ Series offers a complete line. Keep the total cable distance to a maximum of 30m (98.4 ft). For the built-in controller type (FLEX) driver, only the CC002-RS4 cable can be used to when grouping the drivers together in an industrial network application.
